Earlier this year, we worked with clients who were looking for a custom home that would support their goal of multigenerational living. These clients came to us having previously built custom homes with other home builders. For this home they wanted a larger space and one that could support three generations all living under one roof. To support their goals of multigenerational living in Boise, we helped them create a multigenerational house plan that would meet their needs for more space and the features they were looking for to be comfortable in their new home.

Project Background For This Multigenerational Home In Boise
When these clients came to us they were looking for a bigger home that would fit three generations of family in a multigenerational home. They were already living in Boise, just down the street from their new property, and had previously built a home with a different builder. Because their previous home building experience didn’t live up to their expectations, they were looking for a new custom home builder to help them build this new home.
In this new home they were planning to have older parents living with them, so they were looking for more space in addition to certain features that would be more conducive to their new living arrangements. We had helped other clients with multigenerational living arrangements, like the ADU in Meridian, and had a few tips for building a multigenerational home for them to consider while designing their new home in Boise.
Customization and Special Requests
For this project, we created a new custom home plan, the Panorama, that could accommodate all of this family’s needs. First they wanted more space in their home, so we created a floor plan with additional square footage. This included a larger great room area and additional bedrooms. For their parents, they were looking for a bedroom with ensuite bathroom on the first floor of the home, along with a traditional owner’s suite. They also wanted to have a second story with bedrooms to provide space and account for the different schedules of the generations in their household. Lastly, because two family members worked from home, they needed a larger office space that could accommodate this.
To give them additional outdoor living space this multigenerational home in Boise also included a larger covered back patio. The kitchen also included upgrades like double ovens, upgraded cabinets, a second sink/wet bar area, and two dishwashers.
One of the custom requests that was also important to these clients was incorporating a wine wall into their home design, so we helped them to do this too. There were also upgrades made in the bathrooms with tile showers. In the end, we were able to incorporate all of these design elements and special requests to build a custom multigenerational home that truly fit this family’s needs.
Challenges While Building This Multigenerational Home in Boise, Idaho
One of the greatest challenges we had working on this custom home project was finding ways to adjust the floorplan to fit the required set backs and regulations for this lot. It was particularly challenging with the ratio of the lot size to home size; however, we got creative with the position of the house on the lot and with some flexibility, we were able to make it work with a few changes to the initial plan.
Because of the time of year, we also needed to coordinate with the clients about when their landscaping could be put in so that we’d still have the access needed without interfering with their freshly landscaped property. With a little extra communication and flexibility from the clients, we were able to determine the best time to add landscaping to the schedule.
Outcome
“Pathway built a beautiful functional home for our family. Their full service options enabled us to customize a floor plan that fit our family needs and even with all the planning in the world once construction began you tend to find changes you would like to make. Tim worked well with us and allowed for many of these adjustments and kept us in line for things we couldn’t do too late in the process. It was nice he listened to them all and really made us feel comfortable with the process throughout. T.J got us kicked off at the beginning and really helped bring our dream home into a reality for Tim to build. Highly recommend Pathway Builders to anyone wanting a quality construction. For a reasonable budget.”

We were able to build this multigenerational home in Boise keeping the project within the client’s budget range and customizing it to fit exactly what they needed. Prior to the start of this project we also helped to prep the land by cleaning up trash that was on the lot and helping the clients to coordinate directly with an excavator that could bury an open irrigation ditch before the build started.
Perspectives From the Pathway Builders Team
Building this home was really about the customization to make it a comfortable living space that met all of this family’s needs across generations, from the additional office space to the multiple suites and the additional features in the living space and kitchen.
Because of the previous experience they had with another home builder, we really wanted to help them have better home building experience and we enjoyed being able to build a home for them that had everything they needed.
